The cross-country ski trail in Val Roseg

Val Roseg is a lateral valley of St. Moritz and is by far my favorite resort for cross-country skiing, even though it's not exactly the closest spot to my place. From a sportish point of view there are better places to ski, like Campra or St. Bernardino (Tissen), Cogne (Vallée) or Schilpario (Lombardy).

Nevertheless, the narrow trail of Val Roseg has an old-time mountain scent which makes it distinctive.

The trail itself is nothing special: 7 km up the valley, with a gentle, constant slope to walk on. When I called the trail "narrow" I meant that it is tight enough to be restricted to the classic technique. No skating.

Not that I dislike the latter, it's just that now and then you need to take your time and enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere of the place. In this sense alternating here is more appropriate.

The trail starts from Pontresina, in front of the train station. Leave your car in the parking lot, or come by train. If you feel brave, leave the car in St Moritz. If you feel even braver, leave it in Sils.

Anyway, just after the bridge a bearded Swiss mountaneer will stop you and ask for a few francs - about 8 or 10. Pay him and continue your path. You'll soon cross the trail coming from St Moritz, like Elena in the picture.

It's the same direction I was used to get by when I was younger and leaner.

If you don't even feel like skiing, there is a horse-sledge trail quite comfortable and old-style which will take you the the same place, sitten under a thick fur of something while a Swiss horse with some flatulence problem walks on a steady pace in front of your face.

If you are skiing, be careful where the two trails cross: you don't want to spoil your wax with horse dung... Take them out and cross the horse trail carefully.

A gentle stream of icy water borders the trail. Stop to get some picture, and look at the deers and chamois staring at you from the valley's sides.

Val Roseg's Glacier

End of the trail: on your right a warm Swiss stube where to get some rest and hot chocolate. In front of you the green front of the glacier.

Go back from on the same trail. Jump into your car. Drive to Italy from the Maloja pass, stop right after the border at the "Crotto Chigi" restaurant and help yourself with some good rounds of pizzoccheri and the ever classic "Inferno" (Valtellina Superiore) red wine.
